What do I do with my arms while speaking?
One of the most common questions I’m asked is, “What do I do with my arms while speaking?”
Here’s the short answer…
When our head and are heart are truly connected with the words we’re saying, the appendages will follow. If you feel awkward while speaking and your arms are just hanging by your sides, then you need to focus more on the words that you say and the message that you’re trying to get across.
When you speak meaningfully to others, the arms will move naturally.
If we move the arms on purpose, that’s choreography. Note that it takes years to be a good dancer or choreographer, so unless you have that kind of expertise, focus instead on speaking from your head, heart and gut.
Do your arms move when you get excited watching sports?
Would your arms move if you just won the lottery?
Do you have friends who are expressive and move their arms naturally while speaking?
For your homework, start paying attention to your own arms, and others arms and when they move or don’t move.
